Welcome to the home page of EEShell, a free replacement shell for 32-bit Windows.

• The shell is what you see when all other programs are closed.
  • The default shell for 32- and 64-bit Windows is Explorer, which provides the Start menu, the taskbar, the desktop, and several other things.
  • The default shell for 16-bit Windows is Progman, which provides program groups and their icons.

EEShell, EEShell2, EEShell2/16, and all variations thereof were written by Erik Siers, and are hosted on Sourceforge.

The current features of EEShell (not shared by all variations) include:

• small file size
• memory usage usually better than Explorer
• a (broken) plugin system (EEShell2 v0.7 only)
• let EEShell2 register itself as the system shell (v0.8.0 and newer)
• seperate startup directory (EEShell2 only)
  • can disable startup items (individually or all of them)
  • can add a delay to any startup item
  • can also load items in Start Menu's Startup folder (without the above two options)

Some things I never planned to include in EEShell:

• anything that takes a big chunk of my time
• anything that I don't want for myself (thus the plugin system I tried to make)

Note: There are some bugs in 0.8.3 that I won't be fixing until 0.9.0. Sorry if it inconveniences anyone. (Oh, who am I kidding? Nobody actually uses EEShell2 anyway.)

The main purpose of EEShell was to provide me with a shell that does what I want. I reviewed some of the more popular shells (and some of the less popular ones) and didn't like any of them 100%, so I wrote my own. (I'm not entirely happy with EEShell either -- yet -- but I'm in control of it, and believe me, that's a huge bonus.)

The original version of EEShell (v0.0) was sub-minimal and semi-functional. It's entire purpose was to use less memory than Explorer. The source code for that original version has unfortunately been lost, but the program is available for download, if you want it. (I ran it through WDASM a few years ago; the results are available on the SF.net download page.) EEShell 1.0, the most recent EEShell version, was written in PowerBasic 8.0, and both source and executable are available for download.

For those of you who might want more content here, I'm hand-writing the HTML stuff in addition to the content. This is all I'm really up for right now.
